University of Melbourne — Search Uplift

Discovery, strategy, and UX recommendations for improving search relevance, context, filtering, analytics, and governance across a complex university ecosystem.

Project snapshot

Discovery, synthesis, concept recommendations, and a prioritised roadmap for a more relevant and context-aware search experience.

We worked with the University of Melbourne on a search uplift initiative to understand why people were struggling to find relevant information across its digital ecosystem. I led the discovery, experience strategy, synthesis, and UX recommendation work across the engagement.

The challenge was not a single search box. It was a fragmented search ecosystem spanning courses, people, research, maps, events, services, faculties, and institutional content. Search entry points behaved inconsistently, result relevance varied across content types, filters were uneven, and users often had to understand the university’s structure before they could find what they needed.

This work was a discovery, strategy, and recommendation engagement, not a shipped redesign or a measured post-launch uplift story. The project established an evidence-backed direction for a more relevant, context-aware, and scalable search experience, supported by concept recommendations and a prioritised roadmap.
